Santouka again

Santouka’s grand opening was on Nov 23! Finally got to try out their full menu! My friends arrived at 11:45am and there was a line already. We waited for 45 minutes to be seated.

I ordered the Spicy ramen combo for this visit.

Unfortunately the noodles were not as spicy as I wanted…more like not spicy at all except that it looked red! Pork belly and noodles were good just like my first visit. With a combo this time, I have the grilled salmon rice on the side along with a cooked egg (not the yolky type. Boo! =() The rice was alright, I thought it could have been better. The rice was not warm at all and the rice didn’t taste like Japanese rice where there’s a stickiness and vinegar taste to it. Will not be ordering this app next time for sure.

I personally think Santouka should have offered some side dishes such as edamame beans or takowasabi as appetizers; it would have been a lot healthier (less carb) selection.

Apparently, Santouka was giving out free ramen to the first 100 customers for their next visit. And surprisingly we were one of the first 100!! Woot! I think they sell approximately 50 ramens in an hour since we didn’t really get seated until an hour after their opening. If they are selling $10 for each bowl, that is $1000-2000 an hour! Talk about profitability!
And of course for the free ramen coup, it’s just the normal ramens, not the toroniku one that cost $16. My coupon expires on Jan 31, 2013.

2 weeks later, I visited Santouka again hoping to use my free ramen coupon and this time, I wanted to order the toroniku ramen. Tokusen Toroniku Ramen – their signature ramen which servers their toppings separately.

Unfortunately, they didn’t allow me to top up on the difference in costs to have a toroniku ramen!! -__- boo. so I will have to use the coupon at another time. Anyways.

The toroniku was very tender and soft. Toroniku cha-shu is simmered pork cheek meat. According to their website, it is “pork cheek meat that is very rare and only 200-300g can be taken from each pig. It has a very rich flavour and it is tender like fatty tuna“. Indeed it was crispy on the skin and soft inside, similar to a peking duck. Would highly recommend ordering this!

The soury brown veggie were quite refreshing too. It helps clear your taste buds from the saltiness. Unfortunately, no yolky egg again but it’s all good. 🙂
