Ravi’s Soups (@RavisSoups), a family-run restaurant that specializes in soups and wraps, opened their 4th location around Yonge & Bloor on 9 Charles Street W (replacing Gourmet Burger Co.). Their other locations are around Adelaide, Queen St. W and Dundas St. W. It was founded by Ravi Kanagarajah, who started out as a boy making soup in his mother’s restaurant in Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka, before fleeing to Germany after the family business was bombed in 1987. He later came to Toronto, where he worked his way up from sous chef at Mildred Pierce to owning his own restaurants, called RaviSoups. He is also known as “soup master” or “soup king”, however, he unfortunately passed away just a year ago (Toronto Star).
They have quite a selection of soups. All soups are served with a cheddar cheese biscuit and red pepper jelly. Or you can get a soup + wrap combo that ranges from $12-15.
I’ve had the pleasure to try almost every single soup they have. Here’s my order of preference…
Ravistew ($9.99) – With chicken, baby spinach, mushrooms, wild rice, edamame, cilantro, crispy shallots and root vegetables
Chicken Hot Pot Broth ($9.99) – With coconut milk, lemongrass, kaffir lime, fresh noodles, bok choy, edamame, mango, pineapple, crispy shallots and fresh herbs.
Beef Miso ($9.99) – With flank steak, baby spinach,roasted yams, wild rice, shitake mushrooms, edamame, and crispy shallots
Porcini Mushroom Wild Rice Bisque ($8.99) – With crispy shallots and truffle oil
Butternut Squash ($8.99) – With asian pear and crispy shallots
Corn Chowder – With blue crab, thai basil and crispy shallots
– Didn’t have photos for these 2 soups as they weren’t too memorable for me. :p
In terms of wraps, they all looked very familiar to me so I didn’t have a chance to take photos but I did like the following…
Mexican Chorizo Wrap – special time limited (had it at the Adelaide location). It is spicy if you are looking for a kick in your meal.
Roasted Free Range Chicken ($8.99) – w/ roasted yams, baby spinach, edamame, caramelized onions, tomato chutney & chipotle mayo
Roasted Pork Shoulder ($8.99) – w/ Ravi slaw, spicy tamarind ketchup & mint cilantro
Flank Steak Wrap ($10.99) – w/ roasted yams, baby spinach, caramelized onions, mushrooms, edamame, brie, chipotle mayo
If you dine-in, all soups/ wraps are served with a rounded lazy-susan board.
Great place for lunch if you’re looking for something relatively healthy yet filling.
